Backyard Patio & New Driveway
Working in conservation and property management, these clients have a very sharp eye for design, and they wanted to bring that same quality to a mostly barren backyard. The driveway and stairs were crumbling, and the only planting was a lawn that needed a lift. The main goal of the new design was to create an inviting outdoor living space, accommodate (but minimize) the trash bins, and rehabilitate the driveway and with a blend of natural and more modern materials. Landmatters specializes using native plantings which help make the project stand out.
PATIO & LOUNGE SPACE WITH GAS FIRE FEATURE
The existing concrete pad in the backyard was not cutting it for useable space at this Beaverdale Brick. The clients wanted something modest that would be βaffordableβ but still give guests something to talk about. We blended a mixture of natural stone and high character pavers in just the right size and shape to complement the scale of the house. The large accent stone at the corner was custom cut and drilled to accept a gas line which brings a unique fire and conversational element to the space. *Fire photo seen in the gallery above.
New fieldstone boulder wall & Steps
Old railroad ties are just the best arenβt they! This project was a typical βremove and replaceβ of a failing set of stairs. While most other companies wouldβve just used standard segmental concrete blocks we opted to use a materials that will last forever. You can see the careful and artistic placement of the granite field stone boulders and landscape treads which are custom cut for proper riser heights.
House Remodel with patio and gravel courtyard feel
Anchor Investments had big dreams for this commanding 6br 8ba colonial revival home renovation near Booneville, not least of which was taking advantage of the incredible southwest views over the Racoon River valley. With a massive outdoor fireplace, the homeβs back porch was an absolute centerpiece of the project, and we extended that space outdoors with two new seating walls that frame the view with sleek dark colored modern paving from Techo-bloc.
A new take on replacing The retaining wall
Three towering - and increasingly unstable - railroad tie retaining walls were robbing these Saylorville homeowners of any hope their seriously sloping backyard would ever invite more than worry and decay. We saw an opportunity to take them on an adventure through their backyard down to the timber. Our design manages the water running through the property by slowing and pooling it into two basins that help stormwater sink in rather than running off. A new winding path provides a calming trek through native plantings that replace the walls with top quality habitat for wildlife.

- What clients had to say -
Rob & TricIa Zeis
We had been going to home shows for years asking for other landscape companies to bid the replacement of our retaining wall. Drew was the only person to ask βWhy do you need the wallβ and to propose something different. Now we have a backyard project that makes sense for us and saved us over $20,000 on the final product.
JEFF & ABBY CHUNGATH
The condition of our old deck had become downright dangerous and the backyard was completely unused. When we took on this project, Drew helped us to design a new deck and patio / fire pit area that we love.
Danny & Katie Heggen
We had a backyard that had absolutely zero character and were long over due for replacing the driveway. We hired landmatters because we knew they could come up with a compelling vision and help execute the entire project. Weβve been enjoying morning coffee and dinners in the backyard ever since.

βYou created a sacred space in my backyard! It is more inviting and welcoming than I couldβve ever imagined. Thank you a million times over for all the care, wisdom and experience you brought with your team.β
